Principal's Weekly Update #247

2017 Back to School Night - Thank you to everyone for a terrific night. From the “excellent” teachers, to our custodial staff for the beautiful campus, to ASB, Link Crew and PTSA student guides and campus supervisors monitoring parking lots and campus – as one parent said – “Did Good!” There were 1064 parents on campus visiting our classes. Many, many positive comments from the evaluations including:
• “Fabulous, amazing, wonderful teachers”
• “Everyone was upbeat and passionate”
• “Friendly, organized, well prepared presentations”
This statement wraps it all up from the many Parent Evaluation Forms:
• “Teachers genuinely seem to care and love teaching.” “You are doing ONE GREAT JOB!”
This is a GREAT PLACE to enjoy our careers.

2018 National Merit Scholarship Program – announced the names of approximately 16,000 semi-finalists in the 63rd Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools enter the 2018 merit program by taking the 2016 PSAT qualifying test. Academically talented high school seniors have the opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million. Two Yorba Linda High School seniors have qualified as National Merit Semi-finalists for 2018. Congratulations to: Shawyun Foroushani and Melody Tang.

ACT College Readiness for YLHS Class of 2017 - is reporting that 184 of our seniors took the curriculum based tests for educational development in English, Mathematics, Reading and Science. YLHS students’ readiness for College-Level coursework is as follows:
College English Composition (YLHS) 89% (State) 73%
College Algebra (YLHS) 77% (State) 55%
College Social Science (YLHS) 68% (State) 57%
College Biology (YLHS) 54% (State) 46%
The ACT Profile Report indicated that out of the 174 seniors taking the exam, 160 will be seeking bachelor’s degrees, graduate study and/or professional level degrees. By “any measure” you are preparing our students for challenges of college curriculum. Again - GREAT JOB!!
