Principal's Weekly Update #252

A Big Thank You  - to the Visual and Performing Arts Department for the delicious breakfast this morning at our Annual Staff Holiday Breakfast.  Thank you to Bincins Garcia and Jazz 1 and Carol Gilfoy and the Choir for the wonderful music. The entertainment really put you in the spirit!!!!  Also a Big Thank You to Kelly Fritz for her Friday craft party.  Everyone had lots of fun making snowmen, penguins and candy dishes!!  Fun way to end the week!!

Did You Hear?
Our very own teacher/coach, Teiko Ikemoto was honored at the Women’s UCLA vs. Baylor basketball game on November 18th as the FIRST Japanese American woman to receive a Division 1 NCAA scholarship to UCLA.  In 1987, she was the only Asian American playing women’s Division 1 basketball in Southern California.   Congratulations, Teiko!!!

Yorba Linda Public Library sponsor the Exposed “Fresh Perspectives” Art and Literature Contest.  YLHS art, photography and literature student work will be on display at the awards gala on Tuesday, December 5th at 6:30 p.m. at the Nixon Presidential Library and Museum.  Stop by and support our very talented students – and it’s free!

YLHS Theater department present – A Christmas Carol  - under the direction of Cathy Petz, opens December 1st and runs December 2, 7, 8th @ 7:00 p.m. and Matinees on December 3 & 9 @ 3:00 p.m.  Come out and see our very talented YLHS students perform.  Contact Cathy for staff seating.

A Big Thank You  - to Dr. Richard Dinh for planning and organizing our 2017 Honors/AP Information Night last Wednesday for our incoming 2018 freshmen class.  Department members, along with three students, discussed course expectations and the importance of organizational skills when taking on the challenges of honors AP/college level classes.  Over 150 parents and students listened to presentations from Greg Walls – Science, Stacy Shube – Language Arts, Nereida Nunez – World Languages, Wesley Peacock – Math, Dan Eliot - Technology and Rey Lejano – Social Science.  Students, Matt Liao, Dhruu Chaddah and Paige Weingarten spoke about the challenges and rewards of honors and AP classes.

Hour of Code  - Our very own Dan Eliot has been training his Mobile App and AP Computer Science students so they can help teach their friends “coding” next week.  Mr. Eliot is planning on having “coding experiences” next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday after school, during “Hour Of Code”.  Everyone is invited!

Breaking Down the Walls  - will start Tuesday with an all school assembly and continue Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with small group activities.  A Big Thank You to Shea Runge and ASB for all their time and planning to bring this important program and the message of tolerance and caring that it sends to all of our students.
