Study Guide & Writing Assignment #4 - The Pearl by John Steinbeck

Not due until after Spring Break, this assignment will have students reading Steinbeck's famous short story The Pearl (about 45 pages) and answering study guide questions as well as writing a fictitious business letter to one of the characters. This assignment is similar to 1st semester's Hound of the Baskervilles in that the reading and work will be done entirely outside of class. However, this time, there is no test; the work itself is the assessment. The entire assignment is due on Monday, April 23rd and as a class, we will discuss the study guide questions.

The questions and writing assignment are downloadable below. Answers may be hand-written, but since an online version of the text is available, typing answers may save time, since students can copy and paste when quotes are asked for.

Printed copies of the text are also available through the library (with a student ID) or through the teacher (Mrs. Mazurier) upon request.

Writing Assignment #3 - Sonnet Creation & Oration
To further our studies of poetry and segue into our unit on Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, students will write, memorize, and perform their own Shakespearean sonnets. Class work time will be given on Thursday 3/22 and Friday 3/23. Performances will begin on Thursday 3/29 and all students should be prepared to go that day even though performances will continue into Friday 3/20 and Monday 4/2.

Sonnets should be typed according to the YLHS Style Guide. A title should be given and every five lines should be numbered. If numbers are too hard to add on the computer, that part can be written on (like the song lyrics of the last writing assignment)
