This packet consists of various assignments that will be ongoing over the course of the The Odyssey Unit. Assignments include a introduction scavenger hunt, study guide questions, and a Mythology Hunt. Specific due dates for each individual assignment can be found on the calendar (click "read more" under course description)

DO NOT lose these assignments because although assignments can be made up, stamps cannot be given late. Completed assignments with stamps receive full credit, completed assignments without stamps receive half credit, and incomplete assignments receive no credit.

Theme: The Courage to Create - Message to the Future

So as to extend our Night Unit and give a message to the future, students will create an entry for the 14th Annual Chapman Holocaust Art & Writing Contest. Students may choose to compete in either category (Art or Poetry/Prose). The top 3 LA1-H entries will go on the compete at the next level against various high schools and teens, some as far away as Central America.

Finish reading the following introductory materials for the Holocaust/Night. You must have at least 5 bullet points (notes) to summarize each reading. We will do "Holocaust Intro Reading 1" in class as an example.

Writing Situation: The theme of a literary work is the message or main idea that the writer wants to you remember. Themes often relate to emotions or experiences that are universal. You have finished reading James Hurst’s ”The Scarlet Ibis,” a short story that deals with many topics including but not limited to death, brotherhood, guilt, pride, and differences; therefore, the message of the piece is left open to some interpretation.

Writing Directions: In a coherent essay of four (4) paragraphs, write an interpretive essay about what you think the theme of the short story is.

REMEMBER:

This paper (including brainstorming and outline) is worth 100 points and is due 10/12 whether you are in school that day or not. NO EXCEPTIONS. If necessary, send the paper with a reliable courier to give to me or to place in my mailbox no later than the time your class period normally ends. You may also email your paper to me and bring a hard copy when you return.

A complete year long list is included the file below, but only Quarter 1 terms need to be done by next Tuesday (9/11). Remember, putting definitions in your own words is the best way to remember them and you must handwrite the definitions.
