Spanish 3 Course Outline       

Spanish 3 focuses on solidifying the foundation of advanced vocabulary while integrating various compound tenses and commands in conjunction with the subjunctive mood.  Spanish 3 is an intermediate level course that requires a full mastery of all topics introduced in Spanish 1 and  2.  Review of these themes will be brief and students will begin to use new concepts almost immediately.  Students will apply their newly learned skills through reading short novels, writing narratives and participating in conversational activities as well as analyzing both written and spoken authentic target language materials.  Because it is impossible to understand a language isolated from its cultures, this class will engage in an exploration of current Hispanic events, culture, history and geography.  Student participation in Spanish is absolutely essential to success in this class, which will be conducted almost entirely in the target language.

1. Class participation:

This plays a very important role in getting the most out of the class. The following guidelines will ensure the best grade possible. (You can not regain this points back)

1. Constant attention and effort to classroom activities.
2. Actively listening (note taking)
3. Enthusiasm for learning and a positive learning
4. Endeavouring to use Spanish whenever possible (This is the only way to get an “O” in citizenship)
5. Volunteering for class discussions and activities
6. Being on task for all individual and group activities

4. Electronic Devices are only permitted with Ms.Gigliotti  permission and only for classroom related reasons.

III. Grading,  Homework and other Policies:

1. To receive full credit for homework, it must be completed by the time you  come into class the day that is due (they may not work on it during class time).

*Homework that is not completed satisfactorily will not receive credit. In other words, if the homework was filled out without really thinking about your answers (illogical answers), No credit will be given. The purpose of homework is to practice the skills we learn in class - Think about it as practicing free throws in basketball or penalty shots in soccer!

1. Late homework will be accepted only one day after it is due for credit only if it is completed in front of me during break.

The only exception to this rule is if you are absent.  If you know that you are going to be absent, the student must see their teacher ahead of time to get the work that will be missed.  For unplanned absences, IT’S THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO see their Google classroom / REMIND or teacher for make-up work and to make arrangements to take any tests/quizzes they may have missed. CHECK REMIND/ WEBSITE and note the student has ONE WEEK from the time they get back to make up tests/quizzes or they will be counted as a zero. (If absent they day the assessment was given, students must make up the assessment they day they return)

3) Late projects will lose 10% A DAY and after the third day, credit given will be determined per teacher.

1. Grading Scale:

Spanish Department Wide Grading, Expectations and Rubrics(Weighted Grading):

-->60% Assessments: Quizzes, Tests, Oral presentations (not the ppt, research, etc…)

                                Written presentations, 

-->15% Homework: Written and Conjuguemos

-->25%    Participation: Being on Task, Using Spanish in class, class preparedness, effort, (expectations according to Rubric and Syllabus) Project preparation(ppt,research,poster, etc…)

-->2% Extra Credit: Conjuguemos, Cultural Activities

Since the testing percentage is 60% I offer makeup testing on portions of tests ONLY if the student  makes a study session appointment with me. They can retake a portion of a test if they prove they have studied it and are ready to retake it. ( In person class sessions only)

Note: Discipline action will be aligned with Yorba LInda High School’s Discipline Policy found in the student handbook.

1)      Cheating/Plagiarism:

1.     DO NOT USE THE ONLINE TRANSLATORS!!  I will know and you will receive a zero on the assignment. This is cheating and is unacceptable. Ask me if you need help! YOU MAY USE ONLINE DICTIONARIES – like www.wordreference.com.
2.   Plagiarism is defined as: “copying any sentence or sentences verbatim from the reference source without using quotation marks and without providing a complete reference…or printing out an article directly from a computer database (such as Encarta or off the Internet) and turning it in as your own work.  Students must read, synthesize, and write their own original sentences; learn to paraphrase.” (Part II.a)
3.       If you plagiarize, (even unintentionally) you will receive a zero on the assignment. If you have doubts about what you are doing, please COME TALK TO ME ABOUT IT BEFOREHAND! I will help you!

1. CELL PHONE/SMART WATCH POLICY:

•   Cell phones can be used for instructional purposes ONLY when instructed by the teacher.
•   They must be silenced and placed in designated cell phone holder. Students are responsible for picking it up at the end of the period.
•   Photos/videos may NOT be taken in class without prior permission.
•   We do understand that urgent matters happen, in this case, permission will be granted on a case by case basis.

Failure to adhere to this policy will result in loss of participation points/hours and will be subject to YLHS cell phone policy.

VIII. What I expect from you…

1)                  that you come to class with A POSITIVE AND RESPECTFUL ATTITUDE – towards me, your classmates, the classroom and school materials. Speaking in front of others, especially in a foreign language, is difficult for everyone and it is ESSENTIAL that we create a classroom where EVERYONE feels comfortable.

 

2)                  that you arrive ON TIME and fully prepared – which means with:

1.       a writing utensil
2.     your notebook
3.       all pertinent materials/notes/ handouts/readers/worksheets, etc.

 

3)                  that you ASK PERTINENT QUESTIONS when you have them. Asking questions is evidence that you are thinking and attempting to learn the material at hand!

 

4)                  that you be willing to actively participate in *silly* activities and have fun. Be a good sport! We will do many activities that if done in English, seem extremely simple and not worth the time. THAT IS BECAUSE YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE DOING THEM IN SPANISH! The only way for you to improve your Spanish is to use it!

 

5)                  that you take responsibility for your own success – in terms of completing homework, making up tests and quizzes on time, and sharing the workload equally in group projects.

 

6)                  that you SPEAK Spanish at all times in class. It is essential for your success in this class and 25% of your grade and the only way to get an “O” in citizenship.

 

7)                  that you follow YLHS rules as laid out in the student handbook:

1.       that all TECHNOLOGY DEVICES (phones, ipads, iwatch, laptops, mp3s, etc…) remain turned off INSIDE your backpack at all times, they will be confiscated and turned in to the office.  There will be times when these devices may be used in class but only when instructed and approved by me, the teacher.
2.     That your backpacks remains underneath your desk at all times and only items pertaining to this class should be out on your desk, having or working on things for another class is prohibited and as a result, work will be confiscated and turned in to your teacher. You will also lose all participation points for that day.
3.       no food in the classroom; you are only allowed to have water in clear bottles.  Food is only okay when it is a part of our lesson for the day or a fiesta. 
4.     the classroom must be kept clean and organized. If I find you writing on your desk, you will stay in at break and clean all of them. Take 30 seconds before the end of class to make sure your area is clean and organized.

*Failure to follow these expectations will result in loss of participation points/detention.*

What will this class be like?  Our goal is to USE the Spanish you already know, while still advancing in vocabulary and grammar knowledge. So we will be:

Ø  Reading authentic literature in Spanish (short stories, short novels, poems, articles, magazines, publicity, etc...)

Ø  Writing (short-stories, letters,  emails,paragraphs, journals, essays, poems, memo,  etc...)

Ø  Listening Activities (conversations, commercials, narratives, etc...)

Ø  Speaking (conversations, interviews, oral presentations, etc...)

Ø  Culture (Research project on different Hispanic countries, learning about popular traditions, beliefs, food, music, holidays, singing authentic songs in Spanish, cultural projects, etc...)

Permission Slip

At times throughout the school year we will be showing movies or parts of movies for enrichment and enjoyment. The majority of these films are tied to the curriculum and are a great resource to introduce culture and enhance the themes in our unit of study.  Students will have an opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding of the Hispanic cultures, history and language.  

We will also be listening and learning some of the popular music of many Spanish-Speaking countries.  Music is a big part of culture and a great way to practice fluency and vocabulary.

These movies and songs have the possibility of having a rating of G, PG or PG-13 (parental guidance).  Be assured that we will use proper discretion when showing these films and choosing the songs.  Thank you for taking the time to read and sign this permission form. Oral Presentation Guidelines:        → All oral presentations must be written in ENGLISH but presented in SPANISH. → You are allowed to have resources in ENGLISH ONLY (bullet points, notes, pictures, visuals, captions, etc…) → No written Spanish is allowed, if you don’t know a word in Spanish, describe it or learn the vocabulary word you want to use. → You must submit an IDENTICAL copy of the notes you will use during your presentation.
