SYLLABUS

Physics and Engineering – Mr. Bloom

Welcome. This year we will use physics to understand the rules that govern our world. Your success in this class will be based on your participation and production so it is important that you come to ready to work each day. Come with an open mind and ready to enjoy what we will learn.

Course Content

The course can be broken into three main parts:

  1. The Design Process and Kinematics (Motion)
  2. Mechanics (Force and Energy) with CAD and 3D Printing
  3. Robotics using Electricity and Waves

Classroom Rules

- Be seated and ready to work before the bell rings – if you are not in your seat and ready, you are late.

          - Keep hands and feet to yourself.

          - Respect others property, person, right to learn, and feelings.

- Cell phones must be placed in the front of the room in your numbered pocket at the beginning of class. If it is caught on your person it will be taken away. Sometimes phones will be used for labs or activities, unless this is the case the phone should always be in its numbered pocket.

- Food or drinks that are not water are not allowed in class. Gum is allowed as long as it is disposed of properly

Consequences For Bad Decisions

- If your make a bad decision you will be warned once, afterwards it will be a detention. If the bad behavior continues it will escalate to a referral and/or a trip to the office.

Grading

The final grade is based on points accumulated throughout the semester. All assignments have a point value and the final grade is a simple math problem: student points earned / total points available. There are four major categories of assignments:

  1. Tests (usually 30-40 points each)
  2. Homework (usually 5 points each assignment)
  3. Class work (usually 5-10 points each assignment)
  4. Labs / Activities (usually 10-15 points each) Projects (usually 20-50 points each)

Class Participation Grade: Part of the final grade is class participation. This includes behavior in class, work ethic in class, and making sure your phone is up in its numbered pocket or being used properly when needed. This grade will become very important at the end of the semester when a student score is very close to a higher letter grade.

Late Work: Work can be turned in late but will only be given partial credit. For example, if it is a 5 point assignment that is tuned in late, it will be graded and can receive a maximum of 4 points. You have 1 week to turn in late work; after that it is a zero in the grade book.

Test Make-up: if a student is absent the day of the test, it will be made up the next day with an alternative version. If the test is not made up the next day it will go in as a zero. If the student is absent multiple days before the test, a teacher conference will determine when the test will be made up.

Lab Make-ups: Students absent on the day of a lab must make up the lab at lunch time on Friday of the same week. If it is not made up that Friday it will go in as a zero. Any special circumstances regarding lab make-ups will be at the discretion of the teacher.

Cheating: Any cheating on any assignment (test, homework, lab) will be given a zero and the student will be given a referral. If you are not prepared, do your best and don’t let it happen again – don’t cheat. The punishment is not worth the risk.

Materials

                   - composition notebook (no spiral)     - scientific calculator

                   - pen, pencil                                       - paper

                   - folder
