Principal's Weekly Update #143

A Big Thank You - to YLHS PTSA and YLHS staff for a terrific 2013 Career Day. An email from one of our Presenters - “Today was such an amazing day. Thank you to the wonderful staff at YLHS and the PTSA president and the students.  This is why we are so willing to come to your school. Honestly, none of us were ready to leave. I loved at the end of each session when kids would walk up to me and say I really want to do this and I get to tell them to have a backup plan, to set goals every step of the way, to believe in yourself, to have passion for what you do. This applies to much more than acting. They get to take so much more away from this.” Reuben

Thank you, again, to PTSA Career Day Chairperson - Tammy Brubaker and Jennifer Johnson for communicating with each presenter and working with Theresa Maeder to plan the morning presentations. All of our presenters who stayed for the PTSA luncheon expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to come on our campus and talk with our students. YLHS students are very fortunate to have staff and community come together to talk about careers and opportunities for our young people to look forward to in their futures.

Congratulations to the Mustang Band and Guard on their 1st place win at the Savanna Tournament. Guard took the overall sweepstakes award. This qualifies them to participate this weekend in the SCSBOA Field Show Championships at Mt. Carmel. Good Luck Mustangs!

Congratulations to YLHS Football and Women’s Volleyball - for a terrific season of league play and making the CIF playoffs. Unfortunately, Friday’s 1st round CIF football didn’t end with a “win” but Mustang football had a 10 – 1 season. Great job, Jeff Bailey and your coaching staff.

Saturday night, Women’s volleyball lost a tough quarter-final match in five games against Palm Springs High School. Volleyball ended its season with a 22 – 6 record. Congratulations to Jaclyn Chavez and her staff for a great season!!

Men’s Water Polo – is still in CIF competition with a semi-final game this Wednesday against Ocean View High School. The game will be played at Segerstrom High School and starts at 5:00 p.m. Good luck – Mustangs!

Women’s Golf - team member, Brooke Graebe will play in the CIF state finals on Wednesday in Carmel – Good luck, Brooke!!

Cross Country - Rachel Iida is in the CIF finals this coming Saturday! Good luck - Rachel! Women’s Tennis - still have 2 doubles teams in contention for CIF individuals. Good luck to our Lady Mustangs!!

Did you Hear? – District Launches Seal of Biliteracy - Starting this school year, PYLUSD students can graduate with one more distinction – official certification of proficiency in two or more languages. At this week’s school board meeting, the district unveiled plans to move forward with the certification, a distinction authorized by CA in 2010. Students would demonstrate proficiency by passing exams outlined in the application that would be completed by students and verified by schools. Students who earn this distinction would receive an official seal on their diploma, a notation on their transcript and recognition in the graduation program. World Languages teacher, Dan Dupont, who spearheaded the initiative with fellow teachers, said that this is one more accolade that a student can earn to distinguish him or herself when competing for college admissions or in the job market, which is one of the initiatives in the district’s new 5-year Strategic Plan. Thank you, Dan Dupont for spearheading this recognition for our students.

Thanksgiving Week – 11/25 – 11/29 – As we all look forward to Thanksgiving and the holiday season. I hope everyone has the opportunity to enjoy a great meal and lively conversation with family and friends.
