Response to Literature – Essay

WRITING DIRECTIONS:

After reading “Early Spring” by Shonto Begay, write an essay in which you describe the speaker’s view of nature in the poem (prepositional phrase opener). How is this view revealed in the poem? Include specific references to the poem in your response. Your paper must have a clear thesis statement. The body paragraphs must be at least seven sentences, and remember to use transitions to help organize your ideas (compound sentence).

 

You must follow these writing rules:

1. N2SSWTSW per paragraph

2. Don’t begin with a, an, or the

3. Eliminate “dead words” – get, nice, good, bad, thing, stuff, and a lot

4. Final draft must be formatted according to the YLHS style guide

5. NO first person (I, me, we, us)

6. NO second person (you, your, our, us)

 

Please use at least three LABELED sentence types per paragraph. See examples in the paragraphs above.

WARNING: Other than this assignment, all work the week following Spring Break will be in- class work. Therefore, this assignment, although assigned before Spring Break, can be completed in the week following Spring Break since it is not due until April 19th. However, it cannot be easily completed in one night. So, while you can put it off until after your vacation, DO NOT put it off until the last minute. You would regret that decision.

Yorba Linda High School PTSA is proud to sponsor Mustang Pride Day! It is a day to promote school pride while beautifying our campus. All students, parents, staff and community organizations are invited to participate. Volunteers will be assigned to areas of the campus which may include sweeping, raking, weeding, scrubbing, removing litter and washing windows to beautify our school.

 

Registration forms (doc attached below) should be returned to the ASB Office NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, MARCH 19th.

Presentations will begin on Tuesday 3/16. Not everyone will go on the first day, but you need to be ready to present in case you are chosen.

 

All visual aids need to be accessible from the school computers. They should be saved to your student U:drive.

* The quiz is not the upcoming Monday but the next one after that. The reason for this break is because we will be having a library/research orientation (5 days) and meeting with your counselors (1 day) to choose next year's classes starting Friday 3/5.

We will be in the library starting Friday March 5th - 12th*. The first 2 days will be spent working on the quiz, map, and top of page assignments (orientation). The next 4 days will be spent working on the biography notes/paper for your assigned historical figure (research paper). All assignments will be completed in class; however, you may finish typing up the final biography over the weekend as long as all of your notes are completed by Friday, March 12th.
