Unit 5: Nomenclature/Bonding packet
Due:
Assignment
Exam! Here are the topics you will want to have mastered for the test:
- Be able to accurately name different type of compounds, as well as derive the chemical formula from the name
- Identify types of bonds (covalent, ionic, metallic)
- Know what the electrons are doing in each type of bond (covalent, polar covalent, ionic, metallic)
- Ionic bonds are held together by electrostatic attraction between cation and anion
- Covalent bonds are held together because the electrons are shared between atoms
- Metallic bonding is between just metal atoms and is a “sea” of valence electrons
- Know that carbon forms many different compounds because of its unique bonding properties. It has 4 valence electrons, thus can bond on all 4 sides very easily.
- Draw Lewis dot structures and know what they are used for
- What electronegativity is and how it is used to determine polarity
