Assignment
To further our studies of poetry and segue into our unit on Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, students will write, memorize, and perform their own Shakespearean sonnets. Class work time will be given on Thursday 3/22 and Friday 3/23. Performances will begin on Thursday 3/29 and all students should be prepared to go that day even though performances will continue into Friday 3/20 and Monday 4/2.
Sonnets should be typed according to the YLHS Style Guide. A title should be given and every five lines should be numbered. If numbers are too hard to add on the computer, that part can be written on (like the song lyrics of the last writing assignment)

Assignment
Music as Poetry
(due 3/20 or 3/21)
1. Select a song (school appropriate; would your principal allow this song to be played over the loud speaker?). The song must have poetic merit, employing poetic devices and requiring interpretation. In other words, the song’s meaning must not be entirely straight forward.
- Lyrics must be typed, but NO MLA format (DON’T include your name on this page)(DO include the name of group or singer). Be creative with font and font size. Fit all the lyrics on the front of one piece of paper.
- Include a graphic that visually represents the song
- Label at least 3 different poetic devices used in the song’s lyrics (a key may be used). A device must be correct in order to receive credit for it.
2. Complete a SOAPSTone for the song.
3. Write an explication of the song’s purpose/subject using the information collected in the SOAPSTone.
- INTRO: hook, connect hook to song and include TAGS, weave together SOATone info. Thesis = P/S (theme) and how it is revealed.
- BODY PARAGRAPHS: EVDIENCE needs to be used to prove the thesis. Remember to include CDs directly from the song and CM that fully explains the CDs and how the CDs show the theme.
- CONCLUSION: Tie back to hook, restate thesis and argument(s), end with a final thought.
In other words use citations.

Any chapter with incomplete questions and no stamp will be given a score of zero.
Unit Exam will cover everything from introductory notes, basic character identification, and reading comprehension questions to complex parallels between the novella and the Russian Revolution.

Assignment
Legend has it that American writer Ernest Hemingway was once challenged to write a story in six words. He came back swinging with, “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” Some say he called it his best work. Others dismiss the anecdote as a literary folktale. Either way, the six-word story was born, and it’s been popping around the literary world for years.
PROMPT: You will create two six-word memoirs—one personal (relating to you/your life) and one relating to an Animal Farm character that will be more of a riddle.
REQUIREMENTS:
- NO MLA format: write name and period on the back of the memoir you do not want displayed
- Six words only per memoir!
- HINT: play with syntax; it doesn’t have to be grammatically perfect
- Hyphenated words count as two even though they’re connected, such as part-time = 2 words; however, contractions count as one word, such as I'm
- A graphic that visually represents each memoir is required (at least one for each memoir)
- Graphic(s) should not overpower the words, and can be hand drawn or computer generated
- The personal six-word memoir should not give away your name
- The Animal Farm six-word memoir should not give away the name or animal type with either words or pictures (be metaphoric/symbolic, not literal)
- Minimum size for one memoir = ½ sheet of 8 ½ x 11 paper
- Maximum size for one memoir = 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper
