Principal's Weekly Update #85

Congratulations to YLHS Song – who competed against over sixty teams in two divisions, pom and jazz. The girls ended up 11th out of 68 teams in pom and 12th out of 60 teams in jazz. They had to advance through three rounds in each division just to make it to finals, which they did in both divisions. We are very proud of what they accomplished. A Big Thank You to Amber Ferris who went along as our YLHS staff Chaperone!

Breaking Down the Walls
- starts today! This is a great program that helps everyone see that “differences” make us unique and interesting. Thank you to Shea, Colleen, ASB, PTSA and our staff for supporting this program. “It makes a difference” in student attitudes and relationships. If you get the chance, stop by and see our students and staff participate in a variety of activities and experiences.

Battle of the Books - is a reading incentive program for students in grades 4-12 sponsored by the Yorba Linda Public Library and held here at Yorba Linda High School last Saturday, 2/4. The purpose is to encourage students to read good books and have fun while competing with their peers. Each team is responsible for reading the 20 books on the Battle booklist. The Battle of the Books is a single-day event where students will compete by answering questions about those books. There are three divisions: Grade School: 4-6, Middle School: 6–8, and High School: 9-12.  Roseann, Precious and Susan worked all day. Our school library was the check-in and headquarters, while ten classrooms were where the Battles actually took place. About 12 Yorba Linda Public Library staff members and some of
their adult & student volunteers worked throughout the day, side by side with YLHS Library staff members! There were over 106 4th-6th grade teams, 15 Middle & High school teams (most consisting of 4 or 5 members). Over 500 students participated but their families, teachers and special guests added to the excitement of the day! There had to be over 1, 500 people on campus that day. We had to use the large external speakers to communicate with the crowds! We received many compliments on the beautiful facilities we have here! This is a great community activity. Thanks - Roseann, Precious and Susan!!

Did you SEE? – Yorba Linda Star on February 9th about the Battle of the Books reading competition!
