Principal's Weekly Update #165

Congratulations to EVERYONE! – for a terrific first week! We have 1,741 students on campus and I have heard many positive comments from students, parents and staff. Greg and the counselors are working to balance several “full” classes by the end of this week. Our goal is to have everyone settled into their schedules for Back to School Night on Wednesday September 17th. Again, THANK YOU!! This is a great school because of “ALL” you do!

Great News for our YLHS Mustangs
- College Board announces National Merit Semifinalist 2014-15! Congratulations to Kevin Chiang, Yusuf Khan, and Sanam Mahta!

National Merit Commended Scholars for 2014-15 are: Beverly Duan, Thomas Kim, Matthew Kimn,
Samantha Kuo, Vanessa C. Le, Edward Nicholson, Joseph Pinto, Kayla Reger and Rachel Stumpf.

National Hispanic Recognition for 2014-15 are: Nathan Repasky, Nicholas St. Croix, Samantha Serna

Nationwide, about a million high school juniors took the PSAT exam, with 16,000 of those becoming
semifinalists for scholarships. Ninety percent of the semifinalists are expected to become finalists in February and about half will be awarded National Merit Scholarships worth $35 million when the final announcements are made in April – July. Again – congratulations seniors!!!

More Great News for YLHS
– We just received the 2014 College Board Senior Profile Report for YLHS. SAT results for our graduating Class of 2014 are:

Overall Scores # of Test Takers Critical Reading Math Writing Essay

YLHS 296 537 575 53.7 7.6

Statewide 236,923 498 512 49.5 7.2

Nationwide 1,672,395 497 514 48.9 7.0

As you can see, our seniors placed well above the state and national mean scores for the 2014 college-bound
senior. Out seniors requested the SAT results be sent to over 45 colleges and universities. Several of the more popular are: CSUF, Cal Poly UCSD, Chapman, Arizona State, UCI, USC, CSLB, SDSU, USD, UCSB, UCLA and UC Berkeley.

ACT College readiness for YLHS is also reporting that 146 of our seniors took the curriculum-based tests for

educational development in English, Mathematics, Reading and Science. YLHS students’ readiness for

College-Level Coursework is as follows: YLHS State National

College English Composition 89% 71% 64%

College Algebra 71% 57% 43%

College Social Science 67% 51% 44%

College Biology 60% 43% 37%

By “any measure” you are preparing our students for challenges of college curriculum. Again – GREAT JOB!!
