A Big Thank You – to our Math Department for our pizza luncheon on Thursday and our annual 3.14 – Pi Day. Great food for staff and 1750 students enjoyed the celebration of “Pi” Day!

CAHSEE – California High School Exit Exam – Tuesday 3/17 & Wednesday 3/18 - in the gym. We will be administering the exam to 400 sophomores over a four hour period each morning. A Big Thank You to Greg Kemp and Kathy Rodieck for all the planning and preparation, along with staff and PTSA in helping with check-in and monitoring the exam. We look forward to every one of our sophomores passing this exam.

YLHS National Honor Society Induction Ceremony on March 5th recognized 63 students as new members for the 2014-15 school years. Congratulations from Superintendent Dr. Doug Domene to Kelly Nguyen, 9th grader, for her 2nd place finish out of 7,000 entries in the Chapman College 16th Annual Holocaust Art and Writing Contest. A Big Thank You to Sarah Shay and Kevin Shanahan for encouraging our students to participate in this event.

Performing Arts –
Orange County Recognition to our Mustang – Fernando Cardenas - who has been selected by the OC Register as one of the Top 10 Theater Artists of the Year. The OC Register has scheduled a photo shoot and interview this next week. Congratulations Fernando and teacher and advisor, Cathy Petz!

YLHS “Sinfonia” Orchestra has been invited - to perform at the Philharmonic Invitational High School Orchestra Festival at Segerstrom Hall. YLHS, under the direction of Phil Mortensen, and Esperanza’s orchestra will be performing at 4:20 on March 26th. Tickets are $15.00. See the attached Press Release with all the details! Congratulations to Phil Mortensen and our Mustang Sinfonia Orchestra!

Mustang Jazz Band and Color Guard - under the direction of Bincins Garcia, are competing in a variety of events. Congratulations to YLHS Guard for their 2nd place finish at the Arcadia Festival. Also, congrats to YLHS Jazz I who out-performed all three PYLUSD high schools at the Western State Jazz Festival at Upland High School. They will compete this weekend at the Esperanza Jazz Festival. Great job!!

Fine Arts -
Sidney Ortiz – AP Ceramics Student – won a Gold Key and Silver Key Award from the statewide Scholastic Art Awards competition. Thousands of entries are submitted and Sydney had three of her pieces receive recognitions. Congratulations Sydney and teacher, Brent Hendry!

The City of Anaheim & Disneyland hosted The Trash Art Expo - at the Museo last weekend. YLHS has four participants from Kelly Fritz’ classes. Congratulations to Brandon Bollinger , who took 2nd place in the 9- 12 division, along with Liz Tipping, who won honorable mention. All four entries have been on display all week at the Museum.

German Exchange Students - will arrive March 24th. We will have ten visitors that will be staying with host families and shadowing our German Language students to their classes. This is a terrific experience for the exchange students and our host students to share cultures and make new friends. A Big Thank You to staff and especially Sissi Mueller for this once in a lifetime experience.
