Congratulations to Cathy Petz! - Orange County Department of Education announced the 2015 Outstanding Arts Educator Honorees. The OC Music and Arts Administrators will recognize our very own Cathy Petz on May 13th @ Segerstrom Center for the Arts as one of the 2015 Outstanding Arts Educators in Orange County. Congratulations to Cathy and her Theater Arts program!!

A Big Thank You - Shea Runge, Jeff Platt, Bincins Garcia, Brent Hendry, Scott Mazurier, James Hay and Desi St. Amant for their planning and participation in our 2015 “Every 15 Minutes” program, along with the support of our entire YLHS staff. “Every 15 Minutes” is an every other year anti-drinking and driving program we present to juniors and seniors, which is supported by CHP, OC Sheriffs, Western Medical Center, OC Fire Authority, Knott’s Berry Farm, Fairhaven Mortuary, Emergency Ambulance Company, Placentia Police Department, OC Superior Court, Public Defender’s office, Brea Towing, Residence Inn, Chick-Fil-A, Filmed Ed, Ultrasound Audio, DV Designs, Islands, Everblooming Florist and a host of onsite staff.

This educational experience reminds us all of the dangers associated with driving while impaired. “Every 15 Minutes” offers our juniors and seniors a real life experience without the real life risk. Thank you AGAIN – EVERYONE – for your support and involvement in our program.

National Merit Scholarship Corp. – announced the top 50,000 out of 1.5 million participants in the 2014 PSAT test. The following 15 Mustangs have met the requirements to enter the 2016 National Merit Scholarship program. In September, 16,000 will be named National Merit Program Semi-finalists representing the top scores in each state and 34,000 will be commended for their performance on the PSAT. Semi-finalists will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 8,000 National Merit Scholarships. Congratulations to the following Mustangs:

Reminder – PTSA Academic Mustang Achievement Awards – Monday – Apri 27th – 6:30 @ YL Friends Church - Over 250 students will be recognized for academic excellence.

ROP Student of the Year - Justin Arevalos was named Yorba Linda High School’s ROP Student of the Year. He received his award at the ROP celebration held at The Grove last Tuesday evening. Congratulation Justin and teacher, Jenni Messick!

More Great News – Our Class of 2015 has 93 students who have earned the California State Seal of Biliteracy. Requirements for the recognition include:
• Completed all English Language Arts requirements with a 2.0 or higher
• “Proficient” level on State Standardized Test
• Demonstrate “Proficiency” in one or more languages other than English through the AP exam, IB exam,
or four years of the language with a 3.0 or higher
• SAT II Foreign Language exam with a 600+ score.
Congratulations to – 33 students in German language, 5 students in Chinese language, 6 students in French language, 2 students in Japanese language and 47 in Spanish language. Great job students and all of our World Language teachers!!
