Principal's Weekly Update #260

Homecoming 2018 – A Big Thank You to everyone who participated in YLHS 2018 Homecoming rally, football game, half-time show and Saturday night Homecoming dance. Our rally included YLHS Cheer and Song, Dance Company, Video production, ASB, Theater emcees and a vocal performance for the National Anthem and Alma Mater. The lunchtime rally with band, football, cheer/song and ASB was exciting and something everyone looks forward to each year.

Congratulations to 2018 Homecoming King, Ricky Lane. Friday evening our Mustang band and guard started the night with the performance of their field show, under the Direction of Bincins Garcia. Our YLHS football team and Jeff Bailey had a terrific victory over Canyon – 49-0. ASB half-time activities introduced our Homecoming Court and their families with the crowning of our 2018 Homecoming Queen, Lauren Bui. A great Friday evening. Saturday night saw over 800 students attend the Homecoming Dance in the gym. All of these events are a huge team effort with thanks to:

Did You Hear? -
• The University of Chicago has selected Samiya Hai for the University of Chicago Outstanding Educator Award. Each year for the past three decades first year student’s nominate an educator who has influenced and challenged them. Congratulations, Samiya, for being selected for this award!
• Rey Lejano and women’s tennis had both levels finish their regular season this week as league champions. JV went undefeated with a19-0 record and Varsity went 18-6 overall and 6-0 in league to win their 6th league championship. Varsity will host league finals this week on Wednesday & Thursday and then off to Div. 1 CIF playoffs the following week.
• Charlene Dagampat, advisor, and the Speech & Debate team competed in the CSU Fullerton Fall Invitational on 10/13-10/14. Congratulations to novice Congress finalist Chris Mancini, novice Impromptu finalist Shannon Adler and Rishi Kheni 1st place in novice Congress. Also Congrats to Oratory finalist Lauren Schatzman, Advocacy finalist; Janet Han; Wayne Chan for 9th in Student Congress and Aino Hakkinen 2nd in Dramatic Interpretation. Good luck as your season continues!!
• Phil Mortenson and ten members of the YLHS Sinfonia Orchestra were invited to play for the 2018 Yorba Linda "State of the City" address last Wednesday evening.

YLHS Student Services - Lorri Walls, Nancy Coulter, Peyton Pike and JeNell Gandy helped organize and participated in the 2018 PYLUSD College Fair last Wednesday evening. Over 40 colleges and universities met with over 1000 parents and students from across the district at the YL Community Center. Representatives from the UC’s, state and private colleges handed out information and applications. Great activity to help our families get ready to apply for colleges and careers. Thank You Lorri, Nancy, Peyton and JeNell.

YLHS has an E-sports Team headed up by Dan Eliot. Congratulations to the YLHS Overwatch E-Sports Team who won their 3rd round match against Louisville HS of Nebraska on Wednesday. The team beat Louisville 2-0 and improved their overall match record to 2 wins vs. 1 loss for the season. The YLHS Overwatch team is currently ranked 14th out of 46 teams playing in this national tournament. Congrats to the entire team for playing so well and Coach Drake for his guidance. The 4th round match will be next Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in room 337. Thank You Mr. Eliot for providing another way for our Mustang’s to “get connected.”

Two weeks ago YLHS Junior,Taylor Tran was named Grand Prix Award Winner at the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) competition in San Diego regional. YAGP is the world’s largest ballet competition with 9,000 dancers competing from across the US and Internationally. Taylor was awarded the “top performer” in both classical and contemporary dance. Her talent also includes over a 4.0 gpa in honors and AP classes. Congratulations Taylor Tran!!
