New Course for Fall 2019: Introduction to Mobile Game Development and Design

In the fall of 2019, YLHS will be offering a new course, Introduction to Mobile Game Development and Design. This is a course that will teach students how to write game apps for their mobile phone and tablet devices. The course will focus on MIT App Inventor and the Unity game engine to create these game apps. Students wanting to take the course should be interested in coding and have sufficient math and science background to be successful in the class. Incoming 9th to 12th grades students that have completed Algebra I or higher are welcome to take the class. Click for an introductory letter and handout which describes the class in greater detail.

YLHS PTSA Quartermania, Feb 9th @ 6:30 pm, YL Community Center

YLHS PTSA is very proud to announce our first ever, “Quarter Mania”. This will be a super fun and unique opportunity for all families to come together for a fundraising event. Every dollar earned will go right back to our students and programs in the form of gifting this spring. There will be a silent and live auction, in addition to Quarter Mania. If you’re wondering what a Quarter Mania is, it is a cross between a raffle and an auction. Guests can use quarters and their bidding paddle to try to win amazing prizes that have been donated. YLHS PTSA and C2 Education will be offering a full length SAT or ACT test to help students prepare for their big college admission test. Celebrating 10 years of YLHS Today!

Today is the official "10th Year Of YLHS" celebration on campus. The library is hosting a special "10 Year History Of YLHS" display, and later there will be a number of activities involving students, staff, and community members. Activities include a 10 year ribbon cutting at lunch, all students will also receive a special "10th year celebration patch", and the Culinary Arts department has baked cupcakes for every student on campus! 2018 YLHS Business Expo Wrap-up

Yesterday, about a third of the senior class presented their business idea in the 2018 YLHS Business Expo. According to Mr. Walls, the intention of this expo is to prepare our students for the fact that sooner rather than later, they will have to present the best version of themselves to a potential employer, their boss, or clients. Thank you so much to Will Taormina, the founder of the National Startup League, Samiya Hai, Lloyd Walls and Mark Honig. Mr. Taormina said that the five finalists were the best group of finalists that he has ever had. Each of those five teams could have won any competition that he has run. National Hispanic Recognition Program Honors Four Mustangs!

YLHS is proud to announce that four students have been named to the National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP). Every year, the NHRP recognizes over 5,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who excel on the SAT test. Congratulations to Jessica Gutierrez, Jared Mesa, Melody Saba, and Jordan Tatreau for this special honor! YLHS National Merit Scholars

We are proud to announce 12 YLHS National Merit scholars, 4 of whom earned the recognition of National Merit Semifinalist. Semifinalists, Aino Hakkinen, Blake Han, Isaiah Seo, and Andrew Song earned one of the top 16,000 SAT scores in the nation! 7,500 Merit Scholarships will be awarded in 2019. MIT Names YLHS Teacher Dan Eliot "App Inventor Master Trainer"

Yorba Linda High School computer science teacher, Dan Eliot, embodies PYLUSD core values of excellence, collaboration, integrity, and innovation. He has successfully completed intensive training on all aspects of using and teaching App Inventor with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, otherwise known as MIT. Mr. Eliot also serves as the E-Sports coach for the Mustangs, and is looking forward to starting a computer gaming pathway of courses for the 2019-2020 school year. YLHS AP Scores Rank Highest in PYLUSD!

Scores earned by PYLUSD maintain a years-long district tradition of giving more tests to more students, with a higher percentage of students earning passing scores at most school sites. Yorba Linda High School boast the highest AP scores in the district for the past seven years (2012-2018). Theater Honored at the Spirit of Macy Awards!

At the Spirit of the Macy Awards, Yorba Linda High School's students received 18 individual trophies, 5 medals, and 2 Show Awards! Hello, Dolly! was one of 22 schools asked to perform at the awards ceremony and was fortunate enough to win "Performance of the Day." The casts competed against 55 other high schools in Orange County. The students also won the Starlight Award, which is the award for "a school that showcases itself by bringing to life the story through wonderfully crafted characters and classic musical storytelling." AP Students Survey Results

This year, over 900 students took the annual AP Student Survey. Click for a summary of the results from that survey. This information is designed to assist potential AP students in making good choices with regard to AP courses. Thank you to all AP students and teachers who made this survey a success.

Senior Awards Belated Wrap Up

Senior Awards 2018 - was a terrific event recognizing over 200 of our seniors for earning $5.1 million dollars in scholarships and grants. 76 students were recognized with department awards. Student, Parent, and Staff Survey Results

Culinary Arts Fundraiser, Breakfast Burritos for the Staff

Today, was Culinary Arts breakfast burrito day for our staff! For the low price of $6.00, Culinary Arts teacher Jenny Messick and her students provided customized breakfast burritos, a beverage, and a yogurt parfait desert. YLHS 2018 Graduation Staging Upgrades

Big news! The entire "visual" system at Shapell Stadium is being upgraded for graduation, including the addition of I-Mag video screens, 16" elevated side-stages for students to receive their diplomas, multi- camera live stream (that we will archive on YouTube for later viewing), customized stage backdrop for each school, etc. The district has really upped their game to deliver an improved graduation experience for our Mustang families. Building Resilient Families

Yorba Linda High School has partnered with the Orange County Health Care Agency to provide transition support for all 9th grade students and families. Tonight, May 10th, from 6-7p.m., you are welcome to attend an interactive presentation and discussion on Building Resilient Families. Parents will learn about how stress can impact the family and the importance of open communication and problem solving, firm boundary-setting, and connecting with their teenager despite life's busy schedules and demands. Once again, YLHS was voted among the nations best high schools for 2018 by US News and World Reports. YLHS Jazz Band Shines at Reno Jazz Festival

Mustangs!   Wanted to let you know how proud I am of the jazz band kids!!   The YLHS Jazz 1 band came in 3rd in their division out of 18 bands from all around the US, Canada, & Australia who were in attendance at the International Reno Jazz Festival!   Solo awards went to Michael Frelly, Trumpet; Natalie Suvarnashuddi, Alto Sax; Jessica Gutierrez Tenor sax; & Nathan Sakaria Bari Sax.  We also took some time to visit Manzanar (Japanese-American Relocation Camp from World War II).   Like Always kids represented Yorba Linda High Very Well!   Go mustangs!!   --Mr. Garcia

YLHS Track Athletes Sign To Colleges

Hello Mustangs, I wanted to share some exciting news. Two of our track athletes, Sarah Heckel and Lauren O'Banion, have signed to continue their athletic careers at the next level. Sarah will be competing for Boston College in the fall, while Lauren will take her talents to the University of Utah. Staff, Student, and Parent Surveys, now through April 20th

Mustang families. Now through Friday, April 20th, we are having our annual YLHS Staff, Student, and Parent surveys. This is your opportunity to help make our school a better place for everyone. Results of this survey are used for our WASC accreditation report and by our school leadership team. Staff and Students should have already received a survey link in their PYLUSD Gmail. Parents and guardians will receive a survey link using their Aeries email address by 3:00pm April 10th. Please take 5 to 10 minutes to complete this important survey. YLHS Students Design Yorba Linda Days Car Show T-Shirt

Please help me congratulate Alfredo Apolinar and Eloïse Barret Legrand who were recognized at the Yorba Days Car Show this past Saturday. They designed and produced the t-shirts for the car show participants. They worked directly with Solesbee auto crafts and Monticreative to showcase their screen printing skills.

Baseball Team Hosts Placentia Pony Champions League

Hello Mustang Families. Once again I am very proud of our baseball players and had to share... This past Sunday we held our annual baseball game with the Placentia Pony Champions League. The PPCL is made up players with disabilities who love to play baseball. What a blast it was for all to host these players again. This Sunday reminded us that baseball is "just a game." "On Thursday, March 8, 2018, Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) administrators were made aware of a series of rumored social media threats. Immediately following, District administrators contacted local law enforcement, who then swiftly launched a thorough investigation.

Late Thursday evening, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD) determined that there are no credible threats to any PYLUSD school. All PYLUSD schools are open and will observe their respective, normal schedules today, March 9, 2018. Please disregard any sources stating otherwise."

Song Places at Nationals in both Anaheim & Orlando!

Song does it again! Congratulations to varsity song for their terrific showing at NDA Nationals in Orlando, Florida. The team was a finalist in both the pom and jazz categories, and they ended up placing 4th in jazz. This was YLHS's first time ever attending this competition, and finished 4th place competing against the top teams from all over the country. Great job Mustangs!

PYLAA Annual High School Art Competition

Future Business Leaders of America

YL FLBA Rocks at Competition! Yorba Linda High School Future Business Leaders of America have represented YLHS at various competitive conferences, coming away with achievements that will make all Mustangs proud. On February 10th 2018, 33 members of our chapter competed in events such as Introduction to Business, Business Communications, Economics, Impromptu Speaking, Public Speaking, Entrepreneurship, Global Business and more. National Merit Finalists

Yorba Linda has 2 National Merit Finalist, Shawyun Foroushani and Melody Tang.
Out of 1.6 million students who took the 2016 Preliminary SAT, only 15,000 were selected as finalists. The National Merit Scholarship Program determines approximately 7,500 Finalist who will receive scholarship offers. Congratulations YLHS Mustangs Shawn and Melody for your academic excellence!

Science Olympiad Shines!

Congrats to YLHS Science Olympiad on a successful season! We earned the 2nd most medals. Blake Han and Yihong Sun earned a 5th place medal in the Helicopter event and Dhruv Chaddah and Ryan Lowery earned a 5th place medal in the Optics event.

Miss Placentia and Miss Yorba Linda Scholarship Pageant

Congratulations to Yorba Linda High School student, Bella Vino (12th) for being crowned Miss Placentia 2018 and YLHS student, Paulina Dole (9th), earned the title of Miss Placentia's Outstanding Teen.
