Students! I know you are EACH working very hard.  We will have a Multiple choice/matching quiz(for art) on TUESDAY. The quiz will be on ALL reading from last week until Renaissance art (style, examples.) In addition, the Magnificent Medici  movie, and the notes you take for them are fair game. All reading notes welcome! This will be a great opportunity to boost your grade! You will also have a pop reading quiz based on next weeks reading LATER in the week. Good luck, keep working hard. ***I would know what the Medici Relationship to Botticelli and then to Michaelangelo was. How did the Medici show POWER by commissioning these guys? Were they included in the artwork??? Religious? Humanist? Go to wiki and look at Adoration of the Magi 1475 by botticelli and The Birth of Venus by Botticelli. Are these religious? Pagan? 

BTW.....Lorenzo the Magnificent would have been very exciting to be around. He loved to have fun!

**When we think government of Florence we think Medici!! They are ALL powerful. Rich, powerful, influential, cruel, lovers of art, lovers of life. Two Medici's will become Pope (Leo X and Clement Vii) Around during turbulent times ( leo x, becomes pope after warrior pope Julius and at beginning of Reformation(we'll talk later about reformation) clement vii, sack of rome)

Remember-Machiavelli is not evil. His book, The Prince is advice that he would give to any leader (in particular the young Lorenzo De' Medici-grandson to Lorenzo the Great)  Machiavelli's experience as a courtier to Prince's has given him insight into what it takes to be a great leader! Leave your ethics and morals at the door! Force, fraud, murder, dishonesty, power grab, etc...This is how you win/govern. Nice guys finish last!!!!! A good leader is someone is gets things done, not the one that everyone loves. The book in controversial and some say a satire. However, many folks' have seen it as a way to justify all kinds of evil deeds by rulers to hold onto power and govern. This book will be referred back constantly in our class. "The ends justify the means" "is it better to be feared or loved?"

Antiquity=The Classical Era=GrecoRoman=The era when greece and then Rome were awesome-

     Greatest Philosophers of the Antiquity. Arguably "S.P.A." Socrates who taught Plato who had Aristotle as a student. Plato is idealistic and a believer in the possibility of humans being great. This will make him a rock star to the later "humanist" of the renaissance who saw human potential as all capable. (we'll look at the painting The School of Athens tomorrow!)

FREE WILL!!!!!!!!!! This is going to be a HUUUUGE them this first three months. Do you humans have free will? Some say "yes" some say "heck no." There is religious context in it as well as secular. Pico said man is awesome. really unique. We have the FREE Will to choose to be with the angels above or the animals below. We are in the middle. WE can choose. 

*****The Renaissance is a REBIRTH of "classicism," the Classical Era. 

The great wealth of Italy (WHY!!!?) created many rich people who wanted to spend their money on cool things. Art, building, sculpture, etc. Many were humanist or were inspired by the classical designs of antiquity. So, they hired ARTISANS, artists. The High Renaissance will make the "Artist" and artist, a REALLY important person, like a rock star rather than just a SKILLED craftsmen. "Oh....I have some lovely work done by Michaelangelo." Oh yeah.. Well i have some awesome stuff created by...." the rich became competitive and wanted the best. They became patrons of the arts and it flourished!! First in Florence, then in Papal Rome under the Catholic Church.  Let's show off how much money we have by being a patron of the art and commissioning ARTISTS to make cool stuff!

****The High Renaissance is 1450 (when our class technically begins to 1527)  The Renaissance, The HIGH Renaissance, Really ends here. 

Greek was spoken in the East/Byzantine Emp. Latin in the West. TWO TYPES OF LATIN!!!!!!!! The classical latin of antiquity and then the medieval latin that later renaissance people will see as barbaric and inaccurate and controlled by the Church.  For example, lorenzo Valla, a humanist scholar learned Classical Latin and recognized that the Donation of Constantine was a fraud. (the DonofCon gave Catholic church vast amounts of land from constantine's eastern roman empire. It was shown to be fraud. The latin in which it was written was Medieval Latin, not Classical, which was the age of Constantine. GO KNOWLEDGE!

-Civic Humanism. Learn so you can become a better citizen. Share your knowledge. Serve, teach, paint, sculpt, etc. 

Northern Italian cities like genoa, Milan, and Venice became SUPER rich. they were port cities. 

Cosimo Medici was a patron of the arts and lover of antiquity. He created the Florentine Academy which promoted platonism.

*****Pre Renaissance-the ONLY reason to read the Classics was to become a better Christian. 

Pico-Wrote the Oration on the Dignity of Man. It was "the manifesto of the Renaissance"- MAN IS A MIRACLE!! Angels above, man in the middle and animals on the ground. HUMANS HAVE A CHOICE TO BE elevated or DROPPED to the level of animals. WE ARE AT THE CENTER OF IT ALL. Pico-Bring Christianity and Classical ideas in line together, they need not be at odds.

***Baldassare Castiglione-Book of the Courtier-How to be the ideal renaissance man AND how to be a good woman.The reading discusses attributes of both. (Women-beautiful, chaste, literate, non gossipy) Dudes-Primarily for them. Follow this advice and you'll get a gig as an advisor to prince in his court(languages, warrior, instrument, dance, well rounded basically)

All classes have asked INCREDIBLE questions and have added great value to the class dialogue. However, we will need to move a bit faster and spend less time on answering questions until we are caught up. However, I am here to answer ANY questions you have. ANY. *****Please ensure that your student is doing the assigned reading found on the calendar (word doc "sept..) If students are NOT doing the reading they WILL not pass the class, much less the AP Exam. Students should have about an hour of reading/REVIEW a night. Just because there is no reading does not mean there is no HW. This class requires plenty of review. Have your student make flash cards and review them. Review with them, too!

****Also....WE ARE RUNNING ABOUT 1/2 a day behind on in class activities and lecture on the calendar at this point. HW and READING HAVE NOT CHANGED !!We will be caught up though by late next week or early the following.
