Other Notes: As mentioned at AP Night, AP European history is an incredibly difficult class. You must do everything i tell you to do. You MUST keep up with your reading. You need to take note of my texts and website additions. This is unlike any history course you have taken. That being said, it's a GREAT class and you will learn an amazing amount of information, become better writers, and be really prepared for AP US History. I ask an incredible amount from my students but each can expect me to help them throughout the way. I hope this is the class for you!

Philosophes

Philosophes promoted INDIVIDUAL rights. Rights 2 participate in Govt. Right 2 own Property. Right 2 trade. Rights 2 hire NON union/GUILD people. The Right to practice your own religion. The right to embrace science. The right to adopt Secular ideas. Their teaching wil influence new bourgeoisie in France who overthrow conservative Ancien Regime. It'll bring Liberal economics&democracy. Well...they try

*******the "putting out system" and the "cottage industry" both work to avoid having to pay for the production of goods from costly artisans associated w guilds. Avoiding them will lower the cost of producing goods thereby making them cheaper and easier for folks' to purchase. KILLS the guilds/Unions. Enriches the bourgeoisie who'll reinvest that $$$ to build factories

Tips

This is fair game.--Mao thought Stalin great. Stalin dies in 1953. A "Presidium" of like 12 guys will lead. It'll later be referred as the Politburo. W/in a few years Nikita Khruschev will assert himself as the clear leader of the USSR. His wanted to reform the economy. Remember, the west was easily capable of providing consumer goods to it's people, the East lead by the Soviets could not. Khruschev sets out to modernize the economy as well as decentralize the planning for agricultural production. Planting and growing will be put a BIT more in the hands of the farmers. While Mao and Stalin were cool w/each other, but the sixties that will change. W/ Khruschev's reforms, with attempts at improving relations w the USA Mao and the Soviet Union will split in their friendship. In fact, Mao will say that the Soviets are no different than the Western "Imperialist" nations. The SOviet Union was not "Communist" enough for Mao. Following the shooting down of an American spy plane, the US will have to admit they were spying on the Soviet. Everyone knew anyway. the Problem was , that this would make it necessary for Khruschev to cancel his trip to Paris to meet w/ American President Eisenhower. Khruschev could look "tough" to the communist world that were beginning to question his faith.

Grachus Babeuf, Karl Sand

These are VALUABLE. Treat your responses with care.

FYI

The Star Chamber was created by King Henry VII (the 1st King of the Tudor line) Before he came to power, England was very feudal. The Lords who controlled vast amounts of land wield incredible amounts of power; including, having their own armies. Very little allegiance was paid to the king. Henry will change that. He will work to CENTRALIZE authority over England.  He'll weaken the nobility. He'll force them to get rid of their armies. The Star Chamber was created to punish, intimidate the nobility by putting them on trial in the "Star Chamber." They'd be fined or have land stripped from them. As a NEW MONARCH, Henry will epitomize the centralizing of power to a single source within in his nations; future NEW MONARCHs will do the same by CENTRALIZING authority.
